Have microscope; will travel 👍🏼 The next piece of the shop to go mobile is the electronics microscope. The Roadcase has a padded EVA foam holder for the head while the base is bolted to the case bottom and the arm is locked in place with supports. Even with all of the protection, it’s still labeled “fragile” 🤓 #roadcase #microscope #bradanlanebuilds #makerspace

Sometime the right material is the unexpected. The LaserBox needs a storage box. This box, made from, closed cell rubber mat (EVA), is a press fit in the available space and between the lid and bottom. #evafoam #roadcase

Perspective on size 😜 This is my test PCB after etching. It tests out fine.

A highly processed microscope photo of my test PCB - a 20mmx20mm reference using isolation routing of 10mil traces. The one GRBL error is on the 135deg corner but that’s a big no-no in the PCB routing world anyway. The machine still has error which I am afraid will never be eliminated. The most obvious looks a lot like rounding error along the Y-axis, demonstrated by inconsistent widths of horizontal traces. These are worsened by the slight out-of-round beam of the 405nm laser. The hope was for 7-8mil traces (an a dream of 5mil traces) but it feels like the best it will do is 10mils for consistently usable PCBs. This has been an educational journey for not much money. The total for everything in the laser machine is less than $200 US. Of course, there have been a lot of hours of "education" too. :-) #laserengraving #cncjs #grbl #diypcb #pcb #flatcam

Ready for a Road Trip! It’s a bit heavier than anticipated but that is partly do to some accessories and using 1/2” rather than 3/8” for the case. The pre-finished 1/2” was on the shelf so it was an easy choice. The interior contains the laser etching machine, controller, wireless print server, blank PCBs, etching agitator, etching tub, and measurer. The chemicals are transported separately. Finished the physical controller for the CNCjs server (running on a raspberry pi and feeding the Arduino which drives the laser engraver). The buttons make is easy to home the machine and then set the zero starting point for a job. The engraver has a sheet metal plate and PCBs to be etched are held in place with tiny Neodymium magnets. The magnets make it easy to maintain registration between etching tasks - laser the isolation traces, etch, laser the solder mask pads, and then laser the placement text (at a lower power so it doesn’t completely ablate the paint mask. The machine needs a case and I still need to complete the full writeup with machine build, upgrades, and toolchain for creating PCBs. The laser engraver isn’t meant for every PCB but it makes test prototypes quickly! #laserengraving #pcb #raspberrypi #kicad #flatcam #cncjs

The traces are not uniform ... confused about that one. The traces are suppose to be 10mils but left-to-right up-slope diagonals are too small. Isolation paths are about 4mils. More testing and tuning is needed! 🤓 #lasercutting #laserengraving #pcb
